Why Being Car-Free is Important to You: I love cycling in this city and I always like to show others that it’s safe, convenient, and – most of all – enjoyable to get around Memphis by bike.

I also think viable transportation alternatives are an important part of a good city. Enrique Peñalosa, the former mayor of Bogota, Colombia, famously said that a just city isn’t one where everyone owns their own car, but one where even the wealthiest citizens take the bus.

Lastly, there’s something strangely empowering about leaving the car at home. I think walking, biking, and taking the bus – even if only occasionally – increases your sense of self-reliance and forces you to see and experience Memphis and the people who live here in a new way.
